Police manhunt after stranger tries to pick up girl, 5, from playground

Police have launched an investigation after a man tried to pick a five-year-old girl up in a playground before fleeing when her parents stepped in.

The girl was playing at Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom, near Bury, Greater Manchester at about 3pm on Sunday when the man approached her.

Police said he then tried to pick up the girl, who is a reception pupil at a local primary school in Ramsbottom.

Her parents intervened and the man ran off into nearby woodland, Greater Manchester Police said.

The girl was not harmed in the incident, GMP said.

The force has now launched an investigation into the "suspicious circumstances" surrounding the incident and urged anyone with information to get in touch.

Police want to speak a man seen in the area, who is described as a tall, white male wearing black gloves, a red bobble hat, a black jacket and had a backpack on.

Chief Inspector Ian Partington, of Greater Manchester Police's Bury District, said: "We understand that this incident has caused some concern in the community.

"We thank the public for their patience and assistance so far, and ask that anyone with information should contact us first to aid our investigation.

"If you see the man described, call us on 101 quoting incident 1965 of the 12/2/2023."
