Police, metro-east school district investigate how THC gummies ended up on high school campus

East St Louis Police and District 189 are investigating how THC gummies got into the high school after a student admitted receiving some from another student.

East St Louis Police Chief Kendall Perry said officers were sent to East St. Louis Senior High on Jan. 11 to investigate a report of a student at the school distributing THC gummies. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the primary ingredient that gives marijuana its high.

A school nurse examined a student after the school staff noticed she displayed unusual behavior, according to a statement released by Sydney Stigge-Kaufman, executive director of communications and strategic partnerships for East St. Louis School District 189.

“This student admitted to having received an edible from a fellow schoolmate,” the statement said. “Out of an abundance of caution the student was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for care and observation.”

The incident prompted a school-wide investigation to determine how the THC gummies got onto campus.

Once the investigation is completed, the school district will take disciplinary action, following the student code of conduct. Policy does not allow the school district officials to release specifics about student discipline, according to Stigge-Kaufman.

The school district statement said District 189 is “committed to student well-being and safety. We will collaborate with law enforcement and enact additional measures to prohibit future incidents of this nature.

“ We will continue to reinforce positive behavior expectations for students and encourage them to make well-informed and positive decisions,” the statement said.
