Police: Road construction worker killed in crash near Webberville

Correction: The worker who was struck and killed is a contract worker. Michigan State Police had earlier said the worker was a state employee.

WEBBERVILLE — A 70-year-old construction worker from Hillsdale County was struck by a vehicle and killed Thursday afternoon on East Grand River Avenue, near M-52, police said.

The man was working as a flagger, directing traffic through a construction zone, when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle shortly before 2 p.m., the Ingham County Sheriff's Office said.

Responders needed to extricate him from beneath the vehicle and transported him to a hospital, where he died.

The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Williamston woman, suffered minor injuries, officials said.

East Grand River was closed for more than three hours while police investigated the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the sheriff's department at (517) 676-8202.
