Police officer hurt in head-on collision in Shaler Township

A police officer was hurt in an early morning crash in Shaler Township.

It happened around 3:45 a.m. in a construction zone along Route 8. The Shaler police chief told Channel 11 the officer was working road construction detail inside his police vehicle when another vehicle struck him head-on.

They were both taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

Investigators shut down traffic along Route 8 between Pennview Street and Spencer Lane temporarily.

In early August, Channel 11 News told you about another construction zone along Route 8 as PennDOT does scaling and structure work. Police reminded drivers to slow down.

Back then, one driver told us he was happy to see more police presence after his car was hit.

“Two weeks ago, I pulled out of here and got hit when the lane was closed when I left work,” said Tom Watson.

This most recent crash happened a short distance away where a 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. construction zone is in place Sunday through Thursday. It allows People’s Gas to install new gas lines.

The Shaler Township Police chief says it’s too soon to say how this accident happened.

Allegheny County police are investigating.
