A Madison police officer is dead after a domestic dispute in the Crossgates neighborhood of Brandon led to a hostage standoff Thursday morning, officials said. The suspect was shot dead and a Brandon police officer also was shot and injured in the incident.

"We are devastated," Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler said. "We are asking for prayers for the family and his fellow officers."

The fallen Madison police officer was later identified as Horren Randy Tyler, a seven-year veteran of the Madison Police Department, according to a statement posted on the Madison Police Department website.

"In addition to being a valued member of the Department's Special Response Team, Randy Tyler was the Department's Field Training Coordinator, responsible for overseeing the training and career development of newly hired police officers," the statement reads. "He was also a supervisor in the Department's Narcotics Division. Prior to working at Madison, Randy Tyler retired as the Chief of Police for the Ridgeland Police Department. Chief Tyler was a graduate of the 228th Session of the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, VA and was an active member of the MS Chapter of the F.B.I. National Academy Associates.

"Randy will be sorely missed by all of his colleagues, family and friends. The Madison Police Department asks for the community’s support and prayers during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be provided once they have been finalized."

The Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police asked for prayers for Tyler, his family and colleagues in a press statement.

"Please join us with your prayers for officers and family members of the Madison Ms Police Department and the Brandon MS Police Department," the statement later retweeted by Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann reads. The statement also states that Tyler was "employed part time with Madison after serving a full career with the Ridgeland Police Department from which he retired as the Chief of Police."

Hosemann expressed his own condolences in the retweet.

"Devastated to learn of the death of Madison Police Officer Randy Tyler—killed in the line of duty today. Randy is the former Ridgeland Police Chief. We are in prayer for his loved ones. #ThinBlueLine," Hosemann's tweet states.

Story on Tyler's retirement Ridgeland police chief to retire

Tyler had served 30 years in law enforcement and with the Ridgeland Police Department for 27 years.

"He's been an asset," Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee said at the time of Tyler's retirement in 2015. "I've known him most of my tenure as mayor. Ridgeland is a better place because of his service."

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the Thursday shootings that occurred between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Terrapin Hill Road in Brandon.

MBI officials said officers received a call about a possible hostage situation. Moments after arriving at the scene, the subject fired shots at officers.

One Brandon officer received significant injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The identity of that officer has not been verified.

Multiple agencies remained on the scene much of Thursday, including the Rankin County Sheriff's Department, Pearl Police and at least one SWAT team.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumuma expressed the city's condolences for the loss.

"The City of Jackson honors the life and sacrifice of veteran Madison police officer Randy Tyler," Lumumba's statement reads. "We offer our sincerest condolences to both the City of Madison and the Madison Police Department. Men and women who wear the badge are heroes. They've made a decision to protect and serve. They are leaders and an inspiration to everyone. They also make sacrifices like no other.

"Today, Officer Tyler made the ultimate sacrifice and as we honor his life, we will lift up his family, friends, and brothers and sisters in blue in prayer. Our prayers also extend to the City of Brandon and the Brandon Police department. Thank you for your service."

MBI is currently assessing the incident and gathering evidence. After completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General's Office, officials said.
