Police officer uses pepper spray to break up fight at North High School on Wednesday

A police officer used pepper spray to break up a fight involving four students at North High School on Wednesday, Akron Public Schools spokesman Mark Williamson said.

Williamson said a fight broke out between two girls, and then two boys became involved as the school resource officer was trying to break up the fight.

"The officer used pepper spray to disperse the students after they refused to comply with verbal commands," Williamson said in an email statement.

No students or staff required medical attention, he said, and per standard procedure, the incident is under review.

This is at least the second time in recent months an officer has used a chemical irritant to break up a fight at an Akron school. In September, an officer used the spray to break up a fight between at least a dozen girls outside of Firestone Community Learning Center.
