Police use pepper spray to stop fight after Firestone-Ellet high school football game

Friday night's football game between Firestone and Ellet turned ugly after the Falcons' 26-7 win, when a fight broke out near a locker room.

Akron police said the fight involved players, students and spectators from both teams.

Officers providing security intervened, trying to separate those who were fighting.

"(Officers) were forced to deploy a chemical irritant (pepper spray) to disperse the crowd," a police statement said.

Mark Williamson, spokesman for Akron Public Schools, called the fighting unacceptable.

"Akron Public Schools strongly condemns the abhorrent and unacceptable behavior," Williamson said in a statement. "The district will pursue disciplinary actions against any individuals who are found to have participated in this large altercation while working to bring communities together around the importance of upholding safe and respectful environments."

Neither Williamson nor police said why the fight broke out.

No arrests were made, but the incident remains under investigation, police said.
