Clashes erupted between police and protesters in Minsk, Belarus, on August 9 and into the early hours of August 10, after incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko was tipped to win his sixth term as the nation’s leader, reports said.

Exit polls had Lukashenko placed to win the August 9 vote with around 80 percent of the vote in what opposition candidates claimed was a rigged election.

Euronews reported that most of Minsk was shut down by police and military, with checkpoints set up around the city’s main intersections, and government buildings being fenced off. Credit: @iva_anchikova via Storyful
