Police pursuit ends in death of Knox County man, apprehension of three missing teens

EVANSVILLE — Three missing Indiana teenagers were reportedly involved in a police pursuit that ended with a deadly collision Friday afternoon in Knox County.

According to an Indiana State Police news release, the collision resulted in the death of 88-year-old Jimmy Mayall of Oaktown, Indiana.

The police chase reportedly began in Sullivan County after sheriff's deputies there received information that a stolen 1997 Dodge Dakota was traveling south on U.S. 41.

"Deputies responded to the area and spotted the vehicle," the release states. "Deputies attempted to stop the truck, but the driver refused to stop and continued traveling south on U.S. 41, eventually entering Knox County, where the driver collided into another vehicle, ending the pursuit."

At 3:21 p.m. Friday, troopers were called to the scene of the collision at U.S. 41 and Old U.S. 41 in Oaktown. Inside the Dodge Dakota, the police reportedly located three juveniles — all of whom had been reported missing in Vigo and Owen counties.

The driver of the stolen truck, according to state police, was a 16-year-old Terre Haute boy.

According to the ISP's preliminary investigation, the boy was "traveling too fast" as he approached the Old U.S. 41 and U.S. 41 intersection, where he collided with Mayall's vehicle, which was parked at a stop sign.

"Mayall was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he later died from his injuries," the ISP stated.

The 16-year-old driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and, after receiving treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital, was transported to Southwest Regional Youth Village in Vincennes.

A 16-year-old Poland girl, who was reportedly riding in the Dakota at the time of the collision, also received treatment at Good Samaritan before being taken to the youth camp.

A third passenger, a 15-year-old Terre Haute boy, reportedly suffered more severe injuries and was airlifted to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville.

"His current condition is unknown," state police said Monday.

The agency did not publicly disclose who reported the three juveniles missing or how investigators believe they acquired the stolen Dodge truck.

As of Monday, the investigation was ongoing and state police said criminal charges are pending.
