Police release name of man in wheelchair hit by truck and killed in south Wichita

Wichita police have released the name of the 68-year-old man who was hit by a pickup truck and killed while riding in a wheelchair Tuesday morning in south Wichita.

Charlie Jones of Wichita was taken to a hospital where he died, Wichita police spokesperson Chad Ditch said in a news release. He was found with injuries to his upper body when police responded to an accident around 7:30 a.m. at Broadway and MacArthur.

“The investigation revealed Jones was traveling northbound on Broadway in a motorized wheelchair when he was struck by a black 2011 Ford F-150 traveling eastbound on MacArthur,” Ditch said.

The driver of the truck stayed at the scene. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the accident, Ditch said.

Police are still investigating if Jones was in a crosswalk and who had the right of way, he said.

So far Wichita has seen 24 vehicle accidents that have resulted in 27 deaths in 2022, compared with 31 accidents and 34 deaths by this time in 2021. Overall in 2021, there were 43 accidents and 47 deaths, Ditch said in an email.
