Police release name of woman fatally struck on I-55 in Madison County

A Collinsville woman known for her “big heart for kids with special needs” died in an Interstate 55 collision in Madison County.

Jordan R. Chomko, 22, was pronounced deceased at the scene after she was struck by a tractor-trailer Friday night on the highway between Collinsville and Troy, Illinois State Police said in a news release.

Chomko jumped over a guardrail and ran into a lane of traffic before being struck by the northbound truck at about 11:30 p.m., according to preliminary information released by police. The truck driver was not injured and remained on the scene. No other information was released by investigators.

Chomko’s obituary said she was working as a waitress in Collinsville and had plans to become a social worker to help fight human trafficking.

Chomko was born in Awassa, Ethiopia, and “was adopted to cherished parents and came to live in the United States at the young age of 9,” according to her obituary.

“Her compassionate and loving personality, her big smile and sense of humor will live on with us every day,” states her obituary. “She was a good listener, very patient and had a big heart for kids with special needs.”

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Irwin Chapel at 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon and funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
