Police searching for person of interest in Mount Vernon Avenue homicide

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Police Department are looking for a person of interest in connection to a shooting that left a man dead.

39-year-old Vernon Lashawn Hicks was present at the homicide and wanted for questioning, police said. Hicks is also facing charges of felony revocation and contempt of court for an unrelated incident.

This is the second person wanted in connection to the incident that occurred back on Sept. 19. The other name police released was Deonte Dontrell Whitfield for charges of concealing evidence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police responded to a call for a gunshot in the 1100 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue in September, and found 30-year-old Maurice Andre Brown with a fatal gunshot wound. At this time, nobody has been named a suspect.

This was the second shooting on the same night as a teenager was shot about 30 minutes before on Dale Drive.
