A Shelby police officer faced gunfire in the early morning hours Wednesday and now police are seeking information on the gunman.

Shelby Police Capt. Scott Champion said patrol officer J.T. Greene made a vehicle stop shortly after midnight Wednesday on Toms Street near Fullerton Street for suspicious activity.

Champion said Greene initiated his blue lights, and the car started to pull to the side but had barely stopped when a passenger jumped out of the car and immediately began firing at Greene’s car.

“Luckily the officer wasn’t hit, but not from lack of trying,” Champion said.

He said nine shots were fired, and the car was hit multiple times in the front of the car and windshield.

“He ran from that scene and the car drove off,” Champion said. “It was immediate, the car was hardly stopped and he was jumping out.”

He said it was a dangerous situation, and it was lucky no one was hurt.

Police have recovered the car and are still investigating everyone who is suspected to have been in the car.

“We’re still trying to get all the information to solve this incident,” he said.

If anyone has information, they can call the police department at 704-484-6845 or anonymously through the newly revitalized Crime Stoppers Cleveland County tip line at 704-481-8477 or download the app.

Champion said there will be a substantial reward offered to anyone who has information that leads to an arrest.
