Police have shared pictures of a mud-drenched teenager who led officers on a dramatic chase across mudflats before eventually being caught.

The 16-year-old briefly led police on a car chase in Hayling Island, Hampshire, before fleeing on foot.

He tried to evade officers by running across mudflats at Langstone Harbour and was eventually detained.

Police shared images of the aftermath of the "extremely unusual" effort to escape on social media, including the mud-soaked teen as well as officers' muddy boots.

Writing on Twitter, in which they also shared an image of a car that the teen had been driving which had hit a wall, Hampshire Roads Policing Unit said: "Brief pursuit in a vehicle, followed by some extremely unusual effort to evade us in a foot chase.

"20 minutes through bushes and then into the mudflats at Langstone."

The tweet added: "Driver detained and requiring a shower. #23701"

The same account later added a picture of two towels, saying the teen would be able to shower and change at their custody centre.

In a statement, Hampshire Constabulary said a 16-year-old boy from Emsworth was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle dangerously, using a vehicle on a road without third party insurance, theft of a motor vehicle, and driving a vehicle with a proportion of a specific controlled drug above the specified limit.

The teen has reportedly been released under investigation and enquiries are ongoing.
