Police shoot 28-year-old Marshall man with rubber bullet following reported assault, standoff

MARSHALL — A 28-year-old Marshall man was arrested early Saturday following a reported domestic assault and two-hour standoff with police that ended with deputies shooting the man with a rubber bullet.

Calhoun County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 21000 block of Division Drive, southeast of Marshall, shortly after 11 p.m. Friday for a reported assault, according to a department press release, where they met with a woman at a neighboring home who said she had been assaulted and strangled by her boyfriend. She told police he was in their house next door.

Deputies asked the 28-year-old man to come out of the home, but he refused, police said.

After two hours of negotiations, police said, the man implied that he might harm himself and continued to refuse to cooperate. The Calhoun County Special Response Team subsequently entered the upstairs of the home, where they found the man with a knife.

Deputies fired a rubber impact round, striking the man. Police did not say whether he suffered any injuries from the shot, but noted he was assessed by EMS at the scene.

He was taken into custody and lodged in the Calhoun County Jail on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder by strangulation, and resisting/obstructing police.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Police, Marshall Police Department and the Marshall Area Fire Fighters Ambulance Authority.
