Police shoot Carlsbad man after foot chase through Artesia alley

A Carlsbad man was shot by police after leading officers on a foot chase through an Artesia neighborhood, police said, when they attempted to stop him for running a stop sign on a bicycle.

Brandon Sevier, 23, was arrested Thursday and charged with multiple felonies including assault with intent to commit a violent felony on a police officer, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and shooting at or from a motor vehicle.

He also faced felony charges of possessing a firearm as a felon, drug possession and a misdemeanor for resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, along with a petty misdemeanor for failing to yield at a stop sign.

Police said Sevier at about 9 p.m. ran a stop sign on his bike at the intersection of 9th Street and Washington Avenue in Artesia and fled when an officer with the Artesia Police Department attempted to pull him over.

The chase continued down a nearby alley, police said, and a deputy with the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office joined in.

That’s when police alleged Sevier pulled out a gun and fired at them, with both the police officer and deputy returning fire.

Sevier was struck by the officers’ gunfire and suffered “minor injuries,” police said.

He was arrested in the alley between buildings in the 500 block and 600 block of South 7th Street, records show, and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

During a pat down, police said they found a substance they believed was methamphetamine on Sevier

Neither officer was injured in the shooting.

Police said bullet holes and projectiles were found in the Artesia police officer’s patrol vehicle and nearby building and fences.

The officers involved were not identified by the New Mexico State Police, which is investigating the incident.

The Artesia Police Department officer was placed on administrative leave during the investigation, the department said Friday.

Sevier was being held at the Eddy County Detention Center, amid a motion being considered by the court from the Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office to hold him in pretrial detention.

He made his first appearance Monday before Artesia Magistrate Judge Jimmy Foster.
