Police shoot and wound machete-wielding man in Brooklyn

Police shot and wounded a machete-wielding man in Brooklyn after he attacked his doctor Tuesday, cop sources said.

The 30-year-old man punched his 58-year-old therapist, leaving her with two black eyes, at her practice on Court St. near Remsen St. in Downtown Brooklyn before he took off with his machete in tow around 2:30 p.m., according to the sources and police.

The woman sustained “substantial” injuries to her face in the “nasty” assault, NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey said at a press conference.

Officers from the neighborhood’s 84th Precinct notified East New York’s 75th Precinct, where the suspect lives, cops said.

Before cops could catch up with him, he threatened one of his neighbors with the machete, police said.

Cops tracked the man down outside his home on New Lots Ave. near Snediker Ave. in East New York — where he was carrying the blade — around 4:30 p.m., sources and officials said.

The suspect, described as mentally ill, lives in the residence with his mother and aunt, who stepped out when the chaos unfolded, police sources said.

He also assaulted one of his family members who lives in the house before he left for his appointment, police said.

A lieutenant pulled up to the house and began to walk toward the suspect and onto the property, cops said.

“He calls the suspect out by name,” Maddrey said of the lieutenant. “At this point, our suspect gets up — and when he gets up, he grabs two knives. One was a machete, a rather large machete, about 20-inches, the other one was a large butcher knife.”

A blade in each hand, the man began walking toward the lieutenant, who repeatedly told the man to drop the weapons.

The lieutenant then fired his gun twice, hitting the man in the groin area, cops said.

The lieutenant immediately called for an ambulance while other officers on the scene rendered first aid.

Medics brought the suspect to Brookdale Hospital, where he was expected to survive, FDNY officials and police said.

The man is currently undergoing surgery at the hospital, a family member told the Daily News.

The officers involved were also taken to an area hospital for observation.

Police said the man was on federal probation, but did not immediately disclose the reason.

The man’s family told The News they had canceled his therapy appointment and weren’t sure how he got there.

His sister said the family was aware he was aggressive.
