Police: Suspect arrested after firing at officers, forcing evacuation near Terry Sanford

An armed man was taken into custody by police early Tuesday morning after shooting at officers and causing a residential lockdown in an area off Fort Bragg Road, a news release from the Fayetteville Police Department said.

Officers responded at 1:35 a.m. to reports of shots fired on the 400 block of North Churchill Drive, according to the release. As officers arrived on the scene, the armed man shot at police while hiding in a vehicle near Terry Sanford High School, striking one police vehicle twice, the release said.

The Police Department's Crisis Negotiation Team arrived on the scene, and residents were evacuated and the area was locked down, police said. After an hour of negotiation, the armed man was taken into custody, according to the release.

One person was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, the release said.

According to the release, North Churchill Drive will be closed for an undisclosed period today.
