Initially, there was a barricade situation after a tactical team attempted to execute a search warrant at the suspect’s home, but he refused to leave. He fired a flare gun several times inside, prompting the calls to 911 for shots fired.

ACPD said an explosion then occurred at the home around 8 p.m. Some officers had minor injuries but did not need to go to a hospital for treatment.

Neighbors were evacuated as a precaution and will be let back into their homes when first responders say they feel it is safe to do so.

Arlington County Fire Department was at the house shortly after the explosion, responding to the structure fire. At 10:39 p.m., Arlington Fire and EMS said the fire was under control and crews continued to battle small spot fires.

Units would remain on scene for an undermined amount of time, the department said.

Macaulay Porter, the press secretary for Gov. Glenn Youngkin, said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Youngkin is “closely monitoring the situation.”

“While we continue to gather details, the secretary of public safety is ready to assist state and local enforcement,” Porter stated on X.
