Police: Two 16-year-olds charged in connection to shooting, carjacking in Hamden

Two 16-year-olds were were charged in connection to a shooting and carjacking in Hamden in July, according to the Hamden Police.

On July 21, officers from the Hamden Police Department responded to the area of Third Street near Dixwell Avenue for a reported carjacking and shooting. The victim, a 46-year-old Hamden man, was allegedly shot after two suspects approached him and demanded his vehicle at gunpoint, police said.

The victim was shot in the groin during the robbery and suffered serious injuries, according to police. The suspects, identified by police as a New Haven teen and a West Haven teen, then stole his vehicle, police said.

The two teens were charged on Wednesday following an extensive investigation by the Hamden Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, New Haven Shooting Task Force and NHPD Criminal Intelligence.

The New Haven teen was charged with first-degree robbery with a firearm, first-degree assault with a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and first-degree larceny. The West Haven teen was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery with a firearm, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault with a firearm and first-degree larceny.

Both teens were already in the custody of juvenile detention for unrelated charges, police said. They were scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court for Juvenile Matters on Thursday.
