Police: Two 19-year-olds arrested after Camaro theft from GM plant, chase

Police arrested two 19-year-old men early Monday morning for trying to steal Chevrolet Camaros from General Motors' Grand River Assembly, Lansing Police Public Information Director Jordan Gulkis said.

In an email, Gulkis said GM security called the police at 2:30 a.m regarding “(two) subjects actively trying to steal two Camaros” from the parking lot at South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Olds Avenue.

Officers from LPD and Michigan State Police responded and a chase ensued, she said.

One vehicle crashed in the parking lot and the driver fled on foot. He was apprehended by police. The other driver made it out of the parking lot and headed into Eaton County, where he also crashed and was arrested by police. Police did not say where the second crash occurred.

Two 19-year-old men from Detroit are in police custody, Gulkis said. She did not say whether either of the two men was injured. She did not say what charges are expected in the case.

Eight Detroit men and one Saginaw man — ages 20 to 24 — were arrested by MSP in early May for stealing Camaros from the plant as well. Then-LPD Public Information Director Robert Merritt said officers had taken multiple reports on stolen cars from the GM lot in days preceding that incident.
