Police: Two men die in apparent murder-suicide at senior living facility in Hartford

Two elderly men died in an apparent murder-suicide on Thursday, just outside of the senior living center where they both lived in Hartford, police said.

Officers responded just before noon to the area of 35 Clark Street where investigators believe a 67-year-old man shot a 73-year-old man before turning the gun on himself after an argument that was captured on video, according to Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department.

“We have a pretty good idea of what happened,” said Boisvert during a press conference Thursday afternoon. The argument and shooting were captured on video from cameras on the property, he said.

The video “clearly shows an altercation between two elderly males, which resulted in one of the males shooting the other several times and then shooting himself,” he said.

Boisvert said that investigators also spoke with witnesses in the area who described “a minor argument that clearly went south.”

“What started as a simple argument turned into a murder-suicide,” said Boisvert, who called the shooting “tragic” and “senseless.”

Officers were called to the scene after a ShotSpotter activation in the area and found both men unresponsive. One was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to Saint Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Boisvert said.

A firearm was found at the scene and Boisvert said both men were residents of the senior living facility where the shooting happened.

Neither man had been identified as of Thursday afternoon pending notification of their next of kin.
