Police warn residents after Swampscott dogwalker surrounded by at least 9 coyotes

The Swampscott Police Department issued a warning to all residents after a man and his dog were surrounded by at least nine coyotes while on a walk Saturday night, officials said.

Swampscott police were called around 9:30 p.m. to Rockledge Road where the caller reported a large group of coyotes was surrounding them and their dog, and “were not backing down.”

Officers said when they arrived on the scene they counted at least nine coyotes.

“Thankfully these coyotes appeared to be scared off by the arrival of the cruisers and the strobe lights,” police said.

The officers escorted the caller and their dog back to their residence without further incident.

“Please be aware of your surroundings when walking during evening hours as this is the time coyotes are most active,” according to a Facebook post. “We still have many great fall nights ahead, so if you are outside enjoying the evening and encounter a coyote, attached are several tips from the Humane Society to assist you.”

A few of the several tips for coyote encounters include yelling and waving your arms, noisemakers, projectiles, or other items like hoses, water guns with vinegar water or pepper spray.
