Police: Woman damages rental car with chair, bicycle

May 4—THOMASVILLE — Police responded early Saturday to what had been described as someone waving a firearm, then someone being struck by a car on Patten Street.

Police learned the situation was property damage and arrived to find a large crowd gathered around the activity.

A woman became angry and threw a chair at a vehicle multiple times.

"She also picked up a small bicycle and threw it at the car," said Sgt. Scott Newberry, Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division assistant commander.

The woman Kameron Johnson, 20, 306 Simeon St., threw the chair at front and rear windshields and the driver side mirror. Paint damage and scratches were visible over the vehicle's entire exterior, in addition to windshield and mirror destruction, the officer said.

The car, a 2020 Toyota Camry, was rented from the Toyota dealership while the victim's vehicle was being repaired.

The women had argued.

"It looks like there's been ongoing issues with them," Newberry said.

Johnson is charged with criminal damage to property, a felony.

A large crowd gathered during the 1:30 a.m. incident. Pepper balls were fired to disburse the crowd.

The crowd blocked streets as people milled around, Newberry said. People were warned pepper balls would be released if the crowd did not disperse.

"It (the pepper ball gun) was used twice during the weekend," Newberry said.

Pepper balls, which emit a cloud of pepper spray, were used late Saturday night to break up a crowd of more than 200 that gathered outside the Hopkins Street American Legion.
