A young woman was shot and critically wounded Sunday afternoon while riding on Lake Shore Drive, Chicago police said.
The 19-year-old victim was struck in the head as the white Dodge she was a passenger in drove north near Jackson Boulevard around 1:20 p.m., police said, citing preliminary information.
The Dodge’s driver continued north to the area of Navy Pier, where the driver alerted private security, police said. Arriving police officers quickly treated the woman’s head wound with an officer’s first-aid kit until she was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Police did not say what sparked the afternoon shooting, but said the gunman’s car pulled up alongside the Dodge and words were exchanged between people in both vehicles. A person in the rear seat then fired into the Dodge. Police didn’t immediately release a description of the gunman’s vehicle.
