Political Newcomer Jim Penniman-Morin Vies For Cedar Park Council

CEDAR PARK, TX — The 2020 election is heating up across Texas, and there are plenty of races with candidates eager to serve in elected office. Eyes are primarily focused on the presidential election, but voters will also decide the outcome of key local races. Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near.

Jim Penniman-Morin is running for Cedar Park City Council Place 4.

Age: 41.

Party affiliation: Democratic Party

Family: I am married to Sarah, an expert in humanitarian aid logistics, and I have six children, ages 18 to 5 months. We also have a dog and cat!

Occupation: Attorney, practicing for 12 years.

Previous elected experience: This is my first run for office.

Family members in government: My parents recently retired from careers in air traffic control.

What is the most pressing issue facing their state is, and what do you plan to do about it?

Investing in transportation and water infrastructure in a way that keeps up with the rapid growth in our region."

What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

I think I bring fresh and creative ideas to the problems of our city, as well as a lifetime of experience leading teams and building consensus."

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

After graduating from West Point, I successfully lead troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. I've had a successful career as a deal-making attorney. These experiences give me the leadership and consensus-building skills that our city needs now."

What steps should state government take to bolster economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic for local businesses? "First off, by being more aggressive in defeating the virus in the first place. After that, consider a holiday in food and beverage tax would help our hospitality industry bounce back."

How will you address the calls for racial justice and police reform?

By encouraging the Cedar Park police department to continue the great work that it has been doing.

I promise to help make city government boring again by restoring respect and dignity to our council.

What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I believe the city needs to consider streamlining and simplifying the zoning and permitting process.
