Montgomery County GOP group to host candidate forum

A Republican women's group in Montgomery County is planning a forum for candidates running for the 6th Congressional District.

The Upper Montgomery County Republican Women's Club will host the forum from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 at the BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive in Germantown, Md.

David Bossie will moderate the forum, and all six declared Republican candidates will be participating, according to a news release from the club. Bossie is the Republican National Committee co-chair for the presidential debates.

Register online or by mailing a check to Brigitta Mullican, 1947 Lewis Ave., Rockville, MD 20851.

The 6th district includes all of Washington, Frederick, Allegany and Garrett counties and a portion of Montgomery County. U.S. Rep. David Trone, a Democrat, is not seeking re-election so he can run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md.

The six GOP candidates who have declared they are running include:

  • Heath Barnes, Republican, Frederick County

  • Chris Hyser, Republican, Frederick County

  • Todd A. Puglisi, Republican, Montgomery County

  • Mariela Roca, Republican, Frederick County

  • Tom Royals, Republican, Montgomery County

  • Brenda J. Thiam, Republican, Washington County

Hagerstown Mayor Tekesha Martinez announced recently that she had received an endorsement from Sigma PAC 1914, which was created by the historically Black fraternity Phi Beta Sigma.

In a news release from her campaign, Martinez thanks her supporters for the "overwhelming grassroots response" in amassing 1,567 contributions by the end of August.

Her campaign also received its first major organizational endorsement from Sigma PAC 1914, which was founded by the historically Black fraternity Phi Beta Sigma, whose membership has included the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga.

"I am so grateful to Sigma PAC 1914 for their early support as I build a campaign that focuses on addressing complex issues like economic development, equality for all, and leveling the playing field for all Americans, including the Black and brown communities that have been systematically disadvantaged,” Martinez said in the news release.
