Corderman named ranking Republican on Maryland Senate committee

State Sen. Paul Corderman, R-Washington/Frederick, was named the ranking GOP member on the state Senate Budget & Taxation Committee, according to a news release from Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey.

Corderman, who won re-election to his first full term after being appointed in 2020, had been a member of the committee since the 2021 General Assembly.

In addition to Budget & Taxation, the senate has three other standing committees: Education, Energy & the Environment; Senate Finance; and Judicial Proceedings.

“As we begin 2023 Session, I’m proud to appoint these Senators to serve our caucus as Ranking Members," said Hershey, R-Caroline, Cecil/Kent/Queen Anne's, in the news release. "They are all respected members of their committees and will bring tremendous experience and energy to our legislative work this session.”

Freshman Valentine earns Maryland House GOP leadership position

State Del. William Valentine, R-Washington/Frederick, was named a deputy minority whip, according to a news release from House Minority Leader Jason Buckel and House Minority Whip Jesse Pippy.

Valentine is one of two delegates in District 2A, which expanded to include part Frederick County as part of redistricting in 2022. Incumbent Del. William Wivell is the other.

Valentine replaces Neil Parrott, who gave up the position to run unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in November's midterm election.

In politics, a person assigned the position of whip is generally responsible for counting potential votes on legislation and keeping members of the caucus in line on policy.

“Each member of our team is a strong leader in their own right,” said Buckel, R-Allegany, in the release. “This is a dynamic mix of veteran and new legislators who will be instrumental in advancing our principles in Annapolis. I am grateful for their willingness to serve our Caucus and the people of Maryland in this capacity.”

Pippy, R-Frederick, agreed.

“I am excited to work with this impressive team of public servants,” Pippy said in the release. “We have a great deal of work before us as the Republican Caucus, and these legislators are up to the task.”
