“The early job losses in the U.S. are mostly in the tech, real estate, and financial sectors,” said Jerry D. Parrish with the John Scott Dailey Florida Institute of Government at Florida State University.

“Rising interest rates and uncertainty have caused some substantial cancellations of new home contracts in the U.S., although the numbers are not substantial in Florida,” he said. “Continued interest rate increases will affect housing affordability and slow new home construction in Florida.”

Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.5 percent in December 2022, down 0.1% compared to the November rate, and 1% lower than a year ago, FDEO said. There were also 271,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,761,000.

Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 9,578,500 in December, an increase of 21,400 jobs (+0.2 percent) over the month. The state gained 440,000 jobs over the year, an increase of 4.8 percent.

Florida lost 1,282,500 jobs from February to April 2020 and has since gained back all of those lost jobs and more, with the addition of 1,785,500.

All 10 major industries tracked in Florida experienced positive over-the-year job growth in December. The top job categories gaining in Florida were hospitality at 88,600 new jobs or a 7.4% increase, and in second place was the education and health services category, which added 83,800 jobs or a 6.2% gain in workers.
