Polk schools win grants from Swiftmud for education on freshwater resources

The Southwest Florida Water Management District has awarded grants to several schools and teachers in Polk County through its Splash! school grant program. The program provides up to $3,000 per school to enhance student knowledge of freshwater resources in grades K-12, the district said in a news release.

The grants encourage hands-on student learning through STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities as well as engagement of the greater school community through awareness campaigns, the release said.

Recipients of grants in Polk County are Kelly Stentz and Dale R. Fair Babson Park Elementary School; Heather Matousek and Discovery Academy of Lake Alfred; Nicole Goodman and Hillcrest Elementary School; Betty Finnell and Janie Howard Wilson Elementary School; Juliana Downing-Walker and Jewett School of the Arts; Melissa Kelly and Polk Avenue Elementary School; Johnna Bryant and Snively Elementary School; Cheryl Jacques and South McKeel Academy; and Cynara Appling and Spook Hill Elementary School.
