Poll: Which Broward high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Sept. 10)

Broward County’s top athletes were at it again this week with more stellar performances as the 2023-24 high school sports season completed its third week.

This week, we resume a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Broward County high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Sept. 14, around 10 p.m.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Jeremiah Smith, Chaminade, football: Smith finished with an impressive 15 catches for 282 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lions to a 61-21 rout of nationally-ranked New Jersey powerhouse Bergen Catholic.

Jamarie Hostzclaw, Coconut Creek, football: Hostzclaw ran for 114 yards on 34 carries to lead the Cougars to a 20-15 victory over Western.

Michael Merdinger, Cardinal Gibbons, football: Merdinger completed 19 of 34 passes for 221 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Chiefs to a win over Dillard.

A.J. Hairston, Monarch, football: Hairston accounted for six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) and threw for 353 yards on 15 of 20 passing to lead the Knights to a win over Hallandale.

Mia Gold, Pine Crest, girls’ volleyball: Gold recorded 68 kills, 4.1 kills/set, 35.9-percent-kill percentage, 46 digs, 5 aces, and 3 blocks during the Nike Invitational in Wesley Chapel.
