Poll: Which Dade high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Feb. 5)

Several of Miami-Dade County’s top athletes kept delivering clutch performances as the winter sports entered the playoffs.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Miami-Dade County high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Feb. 9, around 10 p.m.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Brooklyn Schiffrin, Palmer Trinity, girls’ soccer: Schiffrin scored a combined five goals and one assist in two district matches to lead the Falcons to wins over Marathon and Coral Shores and the District 16-3A championship.

Luka Szymanski, MAST, boys’ soccer: Szymanski scored a combined five goals including four against defending state champion St. Brendan as the Makos won the District 16-4A championship. MAST also beat Gulliver Prep in penalty kicks in the semifinals.

Santiago Sanchez, La Salle, boys’ soccer: Sanchez recorded a hat trick including the game-winner in overtime to lead the Royal Lions to a 3-2 win over Westminster Christian and the District 15-3A championship.

Sawyer Bartelt, South Dade, boys’ wrestling: Bartelt extended his tremendous unbeaten streak to 96 consecutive matches with five quick pins including four that were under a minute to win his third consecutive GMAC title and lead the Bucs to the team title.

Mya Bethel, North Miami, girls’ wrestling: Bethel recorded three quick pins to dominate the 155-pound weight class and secure her second consecutive GMAC title.
