Poll results: Alton outside hitter is southwestern Illinois Athlete of the Week

Grace Carter of Alton High School is the winner of the Belleville News-Democrat Athlete of the Week, as selected by readers of bnd.com.

Carter, a senior, had 8 kills in 23 attempts with 15 points and 6 service aces during the Redbirds’ 1-1 stint against Lutheran North and Belleville West.

Carter received 78% of the votes after the Knights’ win streak continues this season.

  • Aidan Welch, Althoff Catholic High School, Senior, Midfielder: Welch scored 4 goals — including a goal that was ranked No. 3 on ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 — and 2 assists as the Crusader went 5-1 during the week.

  • Liam Bivins, Columbia High School, Junior, Defensive Midfielder: Bivins scored 2 goals in the Eagles’ 5-1 victory over Highland.

  • Ella Artis, Alton High School, Senior, Setter: Artis notched 17 assists as the Redbirds went 1-1 against Lutheran North and Belleville West.

  • Karen Lewis, Alton High School, Senior, Middle Blocker: Lewis had 9 kills in 19 attempts with 8 points and 3 service aces this past week as the Redbirds went 1-1 against Lutheran North and Belleville West.
