Poll results: Here’s the high school basketball player of the week in southwest Illinois

Natalie Peterson of Freeburg High School is the winner of this week’s Belleville News-Democrat Player of the Week high school basketball poll, as selected by readers of bnd.com.

In recent high school basketball games, Peterson, a junior guard/forward, scored 17 points in a win against Columbia and 19 points in a victory against Highland in the Highland Optimist Shootout where she was named game MVP. Peterson entered the weekend averaging 11.2 points per game.

Peterson tallied 1,000 votes (42%) to finish ahead of Riley Janson of Breese Central High School,

ho secured 455 votes (19%) and Tray Swygeart of Collinsville High School, who collected 397 votes (17%).

Other nominees from the BND’s area included Daylen Byrd of Belleville West High School, Kendall Chigas of Triad High School, Sydney Harris of Edwardsville High School, Ty Lenhardt of Waterloo High School, Mason Shubert of Breese Central High School and Maliah Sparks of Belleville West High School. The poll ended at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
