Poll results: Here’s the high school basketball player of the week in southwest Illinois

Sydney Harris of Edwardsville High School is the winner of this week’s Belleville News-Democrat Player of the Week high school basketball poll, as selected by readers of bnd.com.

In recent high school basketball games, Harris, a senior guard/forward, scored 27 points in a win against Belleville West, 23 points in a victory against Althoff and 24 points in a triumph against Whitfield (Missouri).

She entered the week averaging 24.1 points per game while shooting 52.4% from the field and 80.5% from the free throw line. Harris — who committed to Central Michigan University this fall — also entered the weekend averaging 7.3 rebounds a contest.

Harris tallied 370 votes (45%) to edge out Laylah Jackson of O’Fallon High School, who secured 351 votes (42%) in the closest outcome since the BND started the weekly poll in early December.

Other nominees from the BND’s area included Caleb Burton of O’Fallon High School, Octavia Heidelberg of Dupo High School, Justin King of Mascoutah High School and Ty Lenhardt of Waterloo High School, The poll ended at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

To be clear, this poll is not scientific. In fact, we invite you to vote as many times as you want. It’s all for fun, BND readers.
