A majority of people polled in Germany do not approve of the German Cup being renamed in honour of the late Franz Beckenbauer.

In a survey by YouGov, around 44% rejected the idea while around 29% supported the proposal and a further 29% did not say. The company polled 12,383 people over 18 in Germany between Friday and Sunday.

Former Germany coach Berti Vogts had suggested the idea after German football icon Beckenbauer died just over a week ago aged 78. Beckenbauer won the World Cup for Germany as a player and a coach while also lifting the German Cup four times.

Ex-Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld meanwhile proposed the club's Allianz Arena be renamed the Franz Beckenbauer Arena given his exploits as a player, coach and president of the Bavarian side.

A special memorial for Beckenbauer, one of the world's greatest ever footballers, will be held at the stadium on Friday.

His legacy has been partly tarnished by allegations of vote buying in Germany's successful bid to hold the 2006 World Cup.
