The 2024 presidential election is still more than a full year away but new polling from Yahoo News and YouGov shows a rematch between former President Trump and current President Biden is not only likely but could end up being exceedingly close. Yahoo News West Coast Correspondent Andrew Romano explains what the latest numbers say about the race.

ANDREW ROMANO: So it's looking more and more likely that the 2024 election is going to be both unusual and extreme, because it's featuring a potential rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, who most Americans don't even want to run again. The last time we went into the fields, we found that President Biden was leading former president Donald Trump 47% to 41%.

We went back into the field this month and we found that it had completely changed. Biden had lost his lead, and they were tied at 44% apiece. So this is a little bit of Trump coming up and Biden coming down. Just 34% of Americans approve of how Biden is handling the economy.

There's the corruption conversation. Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, was indicted recently. House Republicans have launched an impeachment inquiry. As for fitness for the presidency, there are concerns about Biden's age. He's 80 now, he'd be 86 at the end of the second term. A lot of people see that as a problem, and that's a bigger number than the number who see Trump's criminal charges as a problem.

Republicans who are maybe concerned about nominating him again were a little bit wary. They're kind of coming around, and in part, it's because Donald Trump is essentially an incumbent Republican president. We haven't seen something like that in a very long time where a president who was in office and then out of office is running again. Obviously, Trump was twice impeached. He's facing criminal trials. There was this expectation that he might falter as the candidate running again for the White House, but we're just not seeing that.

Trump is up to about 60% in the Republican primary polls. Ron DeSantis, his main challenger, has fallen down to 12% or 13%. And so Republicans are looking at that and saying I think Donald Trump's going to be the nominee. We got to get on board with that. Don't want to express negative opinions about him, and so we're seeing a little bit of uptick there.

We're also seeing some small improvement among independents who lean Republican as well. So people who would be inclined to vote Republican in 2024 are coming around to the idea that Donald Trump is going to be the nominee.
