Poll: Vote for the Journal's Oct. 10-16 Athletes of the Week

As the regular season has concluded for most sports, the last week was highlighted by a slew of area teams clinching division titles, including New Paltz winning the Mid Hudson Athletic League boys golf championship.

Last week’s winners were Ketcham soccer player Ryan Zindler, who won the large-school poll with 8,834 votes, and Marlboro football player Ryan Durling, who received 9,469 votes to win the small-school poll.

Voting will be open until 3 p.m. Tuesday. This week’s nominees:

Large-school nominees

Erik Popp, John Jay boys soccer

He had two goals and two assists for the Patriots in a 4-1 win over Newburgh in the Section 1 vs. Section 9 tournament. He also assisted the tying goal in a 2-2 draw with Carmel.

The senior made seven saves, including the 700th of her career, in a 1-0 win over Mahopac last Monday.

The junior had another superb performance, rushing for 260 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Patriots in a 35-21 win over White Plains.

Riley O'Hare, Arlington volleyball

She had nine kills, 20 digs, two aces and 16 service points for the Admirals in a nail-biting 25-27, 25-18, 25-25, 22-25, 15-12 win over rival John Jay-East Fishkill. O'Hare also had 10 kills and 28 digs in a five-set win over Mahopac.

Abigail Kowalczyk, Ketcham cross country

The sophomore won the girls 5K in 20:53.4 at the Section 1 League 1A championships at Bowdoin Park.

He had two goals and an assist for the Admirals in a 5-0 win over Mahopac last Wednesday. Arlington went on to clinch its league title.

Jaidyn Caccomo, Beacon boys soccer

He scored three goals for the Bulldogs in a win over Minisink Valley.

He won the boys 5K in 16:32.3, more than a minute ahead of second place, leading the Admirals to first place in the Section 1 League 1A championships.

Small-school nominees

Loyal Goodermote, New Paltz boys golf

The sophomore shot a tournament-best 2-over 37 at Apple Greens Golf Course, leading the Huguenots to first place in the Mid Hudson Athletic League tournament. New Paltz totaled 153, ahead of Rondout (166), Rhinebeck (170) and Spackenkill (195).

Julia Gigliotti, Lourdes girls soccer

The midfielder assisted the tying goal, then scored three goals in a 30-minute stretch for the Warriors in a 5-2 win over Red Hook.

Justin Coiteux, New Paltz football

The running back rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown and, on a trick play, threw a 3-yard touchdown pass. He also made six tackles, including two for loss, leading the Huguenots in a 30-23 win over Chester.

Carter Usher, Spackenkill football

The senior had five catches for a career-high 210 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Spartans in a win over Pine Plains/Rhinebeck.

She had 14 kills, six digs and an ace for the Blazers in a 25-20, 16-25, 25-16, 25-21 win over previously undefeated Spackenkill.

Lauren O'Rourke, Lourdes field hockey

The junior scored a career-high three goals, leading the Warriors in a 4-1 win over Ellenville to earn the program's first victory in three seasons.

He totaled 207 yards and four touchdowns, including the winning 13-yard touchdown run in overtime that delivered the Blue Devils a dramatic 39-33 win over Blind Brook.

The outside hitter had 20 kills, two digs and a block in a 25-18, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23 win over Marlboro. Zangerle had three successive kills to lead her team from a three-point deficit late in the clinching fourth set.

Colin MacDonald, Red Hook boys soccer

He had three goals and an assist to lead the Raiders in a 4-2 win over Kingston last Saturday.

He ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns and caught a 61-yard touchdown pass, helping the Warriors dominate Goshen.
