Poll: Vote for the Poughkeepsie Journal May 16-21 Athlete of the Week
With the playoffs entering the final stretch in Section 1 and getting underway last week with the Mid-Hudson Athletic League tournaments in Section 9, we again have a stacked list of worthy nominees. A bevy of local athletes stood out in several sports, including golf, softball, track and field, baseball, tennis and lacrosse.
Last week’s Athlete of the Week winner was Arlington softball player Sophie Cargain, who received 1,982 votes.
Voting will be open until 3 p.m. Tuesday. This week’s nominees:
Shaun Flaherty, Arlington golf
The senior shot a 145 over two days at Waccabuc Country Club and Westchester Country Club, leading from wire-to-wire and finishing seven strokes ahead of the runner-up, to win the Section 1 boys golf championship last week. Flaherty was the second straight Dutchess County player to win the tournament.
Noah Brightman, Pawling track & field
He took first in the 400 meters (51.10 seconds) and the 1,600 (4:33.04) at the Northern County Championship meet last weekend.
Yianna Giannoulis, Red Hook
The sophomore scored four goals for the girls lacrosse team in a win over Burke Catholic and she took sixth place in the 100 meters (13.50 seconds) and 200 meters (27.67) at the Mid-Hudson Athletic League track and field championships.

Bailey LaGuardia, Arlington track & field
The sophomore won the girls 400-meter hurdles (1:10.81) and placed second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:19.14), helping Arlington win the girls title at the Northern County Championship.
Gabriella Quinones, Ketcham softball
She pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine to lead Ketcham in a blowout of Suffern in the Section 1 Class AA quarterfinals. Although they went on to lose 1-0 to White Plains in the semifinals, the senior allowed only two hits and no earned runs and struck out seven in a complete game.
Autumn Prezzano, Pine Plains track & field
She won the girls pentathlon, winning the 100 meters (17.84) and shot put (28-4 ½), and taking second in the long jump (13-4 ¼) to total 1,270 points at the Mid-Hudson Athletic League tournament.
Elizabeth Toth, John Jay track & field
The senior dominated the girls pentathlon at the Northern County Championship, winning the 800 (2:35.16), 100-meter hurdles (18.54), high jump (4-5 ½), long jump (16-1) and shot put (29-8) to rack up 2,533 points.
John Zelker, Arlington track & field
The senior won the boys 110-meter hurdles (16.0 seconds), the high jump (5 feet, 9 inches) and the long jump (19-2 ¾), leading the Admirals to first place in the Northern County Championship meet.
Siri Walsh, New Paltz track & field
She won the 400-meter hurdles (1:14.93) and the pole vault (8 feet) and took second in the triple jump (33-5 ½) at the Mid-Hudson Athletic League championships last Saturday.
Jacob Kosilla, Roosevelt track & field
The senior won the boys 800 meters (1:58.47), finishing almost seven seconds ahead of second place, and took first in the 1,600 (4:47.54) at the Mid-Hudson Athletic League tournament.
Hayden Tarsia, John Jay baseball
He allowed a hit and struck out a career-high 14, leading the Patriots in a dramatic 2-1 win over Mamaroneck in the first round of the Section 1 Class AA playoffs last Tuesday.
Juliana Juras, Marlboro track & field
She won the girls discus throw (107 feet, 5 inches) and the shot put (31-11 ¼) at the Mid-Hudson Athletic League tournament.
Jeet Shahani, Spackenkill tennis
Top-seeded Shahani defeated Rhinebeck's Marc Hoffman, 6-2, 6-1, in the final to win the Mid-Hudson Athletic League boys singles championship last Tuesday.
Hailey Hrouda, Ketcham track & field
She took first in the shot put (31-2 ½) and discus (92-11) and was fifth in the javelin throw (73-3) at the Northern County Championship.
Owen Paino, Ketcham baseball
The sophomore went 4 for 4 with a stolen base, two runs and two RBI in addition to pitching well in an 11-1 win over Fox Lane in a Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal. Paino allowed a run, two hits and two walks and struck out seven in four innings.
Tyler Wang, Arlington boys tennis
He defeated Somers' Max Yates, 6-0, 6-3, at first singles to lead the Admirals in a 5-2 win in the first round of the Section 1 team championship tournament.
James O'Rourke, Wappingers lacrosse
He scored three goals, including the winner 40 seconds into overtime, lifting the Warriors in a 6-5 upset of White Plains in the first round of the Section 1 Class A playoffs last Tuesday.
Oscar Cline, New Paltz lacrosse
He had two goals and a career-high six assists to lead the Huguenots in a win over Red Hook last Friday.
Julian Ambrose, Haldane baseball
He threw a one-hitter and drove in two runs to lead the Blue Devils in a 4-0 win over the Leffell School in a Section 1 Class C semifinal.
Nicole Barosa, John Jay softball
The junior scattered five hits and struck out five in a shutout of Fox Lane in the first round of the Section 1 Class AA playoffs.
