WOOSTER − Elections are the backbone of democracy, but they would not be possible without the dedicated participation of poll workers. These individuals ensure the voting process runs smoothly and everyone eligible to vote has the opportunity to do so.

Becoming a poll worker is rewarding, both financially and personally. They are paid $123 for their service on Election Day, plus $30 for attending a training class.

“Poll workers enjoy helping their neighbors and friends while working on Election Day,” said election operations manager Meredith Holder. “Many also appreciate the opportunity to be a part of history by implementing elections. Some of our volunteers like to meet new people and have developed lasting friendships with other volunteers.”

According to Holder, anyone interested in working on Aug. 8 should contact the Board of Elections as soon as possible. Since there is only one issue on the ballot, the pace will be slower than usual, and it will be a good time for new workers to gain experience.

On Election Day, poll workers are tasked with a variety of responsibilities to ensure the smooth functioning of polling stations. The responsibilities include setting up the polling place, checking the identification of voters, verifying voter registration, distributing ballots, operating voting machines and resolving any issues that may arise during the voting process.

In order to serve as a poll worker for the first time, a person must be a Wayne County resident, at least 17 years old, and must attend a three-hour training class.

To sign up to become a poll worker, call the Wayne County Board of Elections at 330-287-5480 or email wayne@ohiosos.gov.
