LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A new poll shows what Michiganders are thinking right now as they get ready for next week’s presidential primary. It shows what Michiganders think about Donald Trump, his likely match-up against President Biden, the war overseas, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer

The poll found 50% of Michiganders think former president Donald Trump committed a crime when he encouraged supporters to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

That’s compared to 42% who said he did not commit a crime.

But even with that said Trump is beating President Joe Biden in Michigan in November.

When asked who they would vote for if the election was today, 45% of those polled said they would back Trump compared to just 41% for Biden.

If Trump is convicted of a crime, that would only put Trump and Biden in a 44-44 tie. The remainder of voters in the poll said they’d be undecided or didn’t want to say for whom they would vote.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Biden’s highest profile surrogate in Michigan, told 6 News the poll results show how important Michigan is.

“It’s just another reminder that elections are always close in Michigan, under even unusual circumstances,” Whitmer said. “That’s something that we should all expect, and that’s why moving our primary up in the process, making sure that Michigan voices are heard earlier on. We are a microcosm of this country; Michigan is an important state. The whole world is going to be watching what happens here.”

Also in the poll – 53% of Michiganders see Governor Gretchen Whitmer as favorable. 40% say she is unfavorable. When it comes to her job rating 53% say it’s positive and 43% say it’s negative.

The same poll also suggests that most Michiganders think there ought to be a cease-fire in the Middle East. That’s following the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas and Israel’s military response in Gaza. The new poll by 6 News shows that 53% of Michiganders think Israel should agree to a cease-fire to get the hostages back and to get humanitarian aid to people in Gaza. Another 27 percent say Israel should continue its war on Hamas and another 20 percent were undecided or refused to give their opinion.

The poll, conducted by EPIC-MRA, surveyed 600 likely voters between February 13th and February 18th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent. Of those polled, 41% said they were Democrats, 41% said they were Republicans– and 14% identified as independents. The rest refused to say.
