Polls are now open for Brockton preliminary election — what you need to know

BROCKTON — Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday as city voters choose finalists for mayor, City Council Ward 3 and 6 and School Committee Ward 3. Brocktonians will also prune the nine candidates for at-large city council seats down to eight.

The preliminary election comes as residents question the city's finances and leadership amid a scandal over a $14.4 million overspending spree at Brockton Public Schools.

The finalists from Tuesday's preliminary election will make the ballot for the general election on Nov. 7.

Election Results: Race-by-race vote totals

Several incumbents won't be running, which means Brockton voters will put at least a few new faces into office. Rita Mendes (D-Brockton) won't be running for her at-large City Council seat. She'll instead focus on her role as state rep for the 11th Plymouth District. That means at least one new at-large councilor.

In Ward 3, leadership for both the City Council and School Committee is up for grabs. City Councilor Mark D'Agostino and School Committee Member Jared Homer both decided against seeking re-election.
