Pontiac Warriors captures Class 3A seventh grade regional title; Falcons fly high

HOOPESTON — Pontiac garnered a Class 3A regional championship Wednesday with a 43-24 drubbing of Prairie Central in seventh grade boys' basketball at Hoopeston.

The Warriors gave Prairie Central a 1-2 punch in routing the Hawks and earning a spot in next week's sectional tournament. Ben Melchers poured in 21 points while Amazon King connected for 15 markers in pacing Pontiac (13-3). Evinn Tracy added 5 points while Cale Christenson chipped in 2 points.

Pontiac got out to a 9-5 lead in the opening quarter and outscored the Hawks 12-8 in the second for a 21-13 lead. The Warriors blew the game open with an 18-point third quarter that pushed the advantage to 39-19 heading into the home stretch.

Pontiac will face Monticello, a 39-36 winner over St. Joseph at the St. Joseph Regional, next Wednesday at Hoopeston (Area) High School.

Flanagan-Cornell 58, Fieldcrest 45

FLANAGAN — A 12-point difference in the second quarter gave host Flanagan-Cornell breathing room and the Falcons went on to roll past Fieldcrest 58-45 Heart of Illinois Conference boys' basketball game Wednesday.

Tyler Pfaff accounted for more points on three made field goals than Fieldcrest managed as a team in the second quarter as the Flanagan-Cornell sharpshooter drilled two 3-pointers and a deuce as the Falcons tallied 17 points in the frame. The Knights managed just five points.

The surge pushed the Falcons' lead from 15-13 after one period to 32-18 by the intermission.

After the break, the Falcons kept up the pressure by tossing home 16 markers and inching the margin wider by two points to 48-32.

Pfaff led three Falcons (16-5, 6-1) in double figures with 14 points. Dallas Hamilton and Sam Jones each had 12 points. William Weber scored 9 points, JD Ruddy scored 7 and Kesler Collins netted 4 markers.
