Pooches of the past

Dec. 23—Seventeenth century artwork focused on people reveals plenty of clues about the era: the different fashions, hairstyles, symbolism of the time. A 150-year-old piece of art featuring a dog isn't dated in the same way, and as a result, the ages of some of the pieces in KSG Fine Art Gallery's new exhibition might come as a surprise.

For example, the piece A Fine Gourmet! by Louis Godefroy Jadin shows a dog being presented a meal; one might not guess it's dated 1855. Elsewhere in the gallery, a silver-bronze sculpture of a French bulldog gazes from a distant past, and a pair of portraits by two artists featuring the same dog invites comparisons. During the exhibition, The 12 Dogs of Christmas: European Traditions in Canine Portraiture, the gallery is donating 20 percent of its profits to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society.

Noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, through Jan. 7, KSG Fine Art Gallery, 66 E. San Francisco St., 505-577-1877, ksgfineartgallery.com
