Poor Air Quality From Fires Could Hit 'Unhealthy' Levels Friday

PIERCE COUNTY, WA – The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued an alert warning residents that wildfire smoke in the area may cause health problems.

As of Thursday morning, wildfire smoke levels are "moderate" to "unhealthy for sensitive groups," according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. Officials expect significant smoke from Oregon to reach the region by Thursday night, as well. By Friday morning, much of the area could reach "unhealthy for sensitive groups" or "unhealthy" levels.

Fire marshals have issued fire safety burn bans prohibiting outdoor burning, including recreational fires, in Pierce, King, Kisap and Snohomish counties.

Sensitive groups, including infants, children and people over 65, or those that are pregnant, have heart or lung disease, respiratory infections, diabetes, and those suffering from COVID-19 should take precautions.

Precautions include:

  • Stay home when possible.

  • Limit outdoor activities.

  • Close windows in your home.

  • If you have an air conditioner, use it in recirculation mode to keep air clean.

  • If it becomes unbearably hot, it is better to open the window for a short period of time.

  • Check with your health care provider for more specific health questions and concerns.
