Pop-Tarts acquires naming rights for Orlando bowl game

After three seasons, the Cheez-It Bowl will have a new sponsor and you don’t have to look far in grocery aisles to find it.

The Pop-Tarts Bowl will debut Dec. 28 at Camping World Stadium, becoming the ninth sponsor to attach its name to the 34-year-old bowl game. The game will be broadcast on ESPN and will start at 5:45 p.m.

The game features the top teams from the ACC (and Notre Dame in some years) and the Big 12 Conference not featured in the College Football Playoff and its subsequent New Year’s Six bowl games. Last season, Florida State defeated Oklahoma, 35-32, for its first bowl win since 2017. The game drew an announced crowd of 61,520 and 5.4 million TV viewers, making it the second-most watched bowl game outside of the New Year’s Six games.

Previous title sponsors include Blockbuster, Carquest, Micron, Mazda, Champs Sports, Russell Athletic and Camping World.

Cheez-It, meanwhile, will remain the sponsor for the Citrus Bowl after assuming the role last season. The game remains a New Year’s Day stable as the top Tier 1 bowl game outside the Playoff. It will air on ABC with kickoff set for 1 p.m.

In its 78th year of existence, the game features a matchup between the top teams in the SEC and Big Ten, not included in the mix for the Playoff or NY6 rotation of games.

LSU dominated Purdue in last season’s matchup, with the Tigers claiming a 63-7 win. The game drew an announced crowd of 42,791 and averaged 3.3 million viewers.

The Cure Bowl, which is in its ninth season, is among seven bowl games to start the postseason on Dec. 16. The game will be featured on ABC with kickoff at 3:30.
