The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, told Vaticannews on May 20 about Cardinal Zuppi’s appointment.

"I can confirm that Pope Francis has entrusted Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Bishops' Conference, with the responsibility of leading a mission, in agreement with the Secretariat of State, that contributes to an easing of tensions in the Ukraine conflict, in the hopes that this can initiate paths of peace, something never abandoned by the Holy Father."

Earlier, the Catholic portal Il Sismografo reported that Pope Francis wants to send envoys to Kyiv and Moscow to discuss the possibility of "starting truce talks."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Pope Francis in the Vatican on May 13. He asked the Pope to condemn the Russian crimes in Ukraine and shared the Ukrainian Peace Formula with him the Pontif. The president said that Ukraine’s plan was the only effective algorithm for achieving a just peace.

Zelenskyy also believes that no negotiations are possible with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin as he is "a terrorist who does not keep his word."

Following his visit to Hungary on April 30, Pope Francis claimed that the Vatican was taking part in a secret "peacekeeping mission" to try to end Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

An official close to the President's Office told CNN that Ukraine is unaware of this "mission."
