Pope’s outreach to same-sex couples is a reminder that Christ loves everybody | Opinion

Pope Francis has officially opened the door to the possibility for Roman Catholic clergy to bless same-sex couples in certain circumstances, marking a profound invitation that would have been considered unthinkable in our collective and not-so-distant memory.

While we do not know what the implications of this will look like or if it will even be permitted locally, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith’s document seemingly validates the work of those of us taking up the pope’s call and cultivating a “larger tent.” However, upon reading the document itself, there appear to be more sensationalized headlines than substantial change, at least for now, coming from Rome.

At Kansas City’s Christ the King, we go beyond offering only blessings in limited circumstances and instead invite those discerning the call to enter into the Sacrament of Marriage, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, a place to find refuge and acceptance in our community.

The very notion that the sacred dignity and worth of those in the LGBTQ+ community, and their capacity to live and serve in ministry with authenticity, continue to be regarded as a topic of debate rather than immutable truth, shines a light on the work we have set before us. Many have become the collateral of painful and divisive rhetoric hurled in God’s name, and the result is that those who continue to hunger and thirst for sacrament, life and justice feel abandoned.

This is where communities such as Christ the King, which serve independently and are not jurisdictionally affiliated with larger churches, come in. Together, we strive to welcome and affirm the sacred dignity of the faithful with an open heart and mind. We stand committed to our mission and ministry to go to the peripheries and extend the love of Christ, especially to those who have felt marginalized.

Our community — diverse in age, marital status, and background — stands united by the Holy Eucharist, a symbol of the unifying love that transcends all differences. As disciples committed to prayer, penance and charitable works, we see this decision as an opportunity to reinforce the message of Christ’s love and acceptance. Our ultimate purpose, aligned with the mission of the Universal Church, is to effect the complete Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

In this pivotal moment, let us unite as a community, respecting diverse perspectives while recognizing the universal truth that God’s love knows no bounds, for there is no shortage of work in a world that is groaning for kindness, mercy, compassion and justice. May our mission and ministry continue to be a beacon of love, understanding and acceptance for all who seek refuge in the embrace of Christ the King.
