Sweet and savory and a little controversial.

Spring has sprung, and with it a bevy of exciting new items from our favorite fast food chains. From new nuggets at KFC to a Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry, we're emerging from a winter slumber with fresh and new menu additions.

Joining in on the fun is Popeyes; The chicken and biscuits joint (which just took the top spot in our crispy chicken sandwich taste test) just announced it's introducing a new biscuit for spring, and it's the first sweet flavor yet.

Starting this week, Popeyes will sell Strawberry Biscuits, a sweet take on the brand's signature Southern-style biscuits. The biscuits start with the same buttery, flaky dough, but add in fruity strawberry bits and a creamy icing on top. They're the brand's first foray into the sweet side of biscuits, and it's one that has our staff divided.

When it comes to biscuits (just like cornbread), people are split on whether they should be sweet or strictly savory. Even a tablespoon of sugar in a recipe can send some Southerners into a tizzy. Not to mention, sweet and savory combinations tend to cause controversy wherever they go (see: pineapple on pizza). Our editors were similarly divided but came to the consensus that we'll probably be devouring these biscuits after our fried chicken, not with it.

One thing is for sure: strawberry appears to be the flavor of spring/summer 2023. Between these biscuits, the new McFlurry, and a Blizzard from Dairy Queen's summer menu, we expect to see a lot more menus featuring the sweet berry throughout these warmer months.

The Strawberry Biscuits are available for a limited time only at participating Popeyes locations nationwide. They start at $1.79 each, or bundle and get two biscuits for $2.99, or four biscuits for $5.39.
