Popular chicken joint agrees to give South Jersey college town part of its land

GLASSBORO — Raising Cane’s is cleared now to open a restaurant here, but that approval required gifting the borough a significant portion of its property for potential road improvements.

The easement illustrates how serious Glassboro is taking increasing traffic along North Delsea Drive (Route 47) tied to continuing growth by Rowan University.

The easement is 10 feet wide, running the entire property frontage on Donald Barger Boulevard. Raising Cane’s was approved Monday night to build on the southwest corner of the boulevard and North Delsea Drive, now occupied by a closed Rite Aid pharmacy.

Board engineer Mark Brunermer said the idea came from his office. The alternative would be in the future buying the land at unknown cost were Glassboro to decide to improve the boulevard, he said.

“So, the easement may never be utilized,” Brunermer said. “But it is provided there.”

“And that easement would provide a dedicated right turning lane?” board member Glenn Sudeck asked.

“It’s something that could be considered in the future,” Brunermer said.

The boulevard runs between High Street (Alternate Rt. 553) and North Delsea Drive, becoming William Dalton Drive after crossing North Delsea Drive. It is a popular route to shopping centers, Greentree Road, and points farther north. Vehicles often stack up from intersection to intersection.

The company also is asking the New Jersey Department of Transportation to change the timing of the intersection traffic lights.
